Sporting News

[united press association. I London, February 26. Fullerton won the Waterloo Cup after a splendid struggle. Simonan won the Waterloo Plate. Melbourne, February 26. Heavy rain during the night made the training tracks sodden, and nothing of importance took place. This morning, Harbour Light, and the others of Crook's team were present, but Titan, Megaphone, and the St. Alban's representatives will not arrive till the afternoon. Disquieting rumours are still in circulation about Strathmore, several good judges maintaining that the stable will have to fall back on Zalinski for the St. Leger. Last night Bungebah hardened 100 to 14, at which price the wager was taken. Shamrock, Stromboli, and Winifred, were a shade easier. Titan receded to 100 to 3. There are good reporta about Gladstone, who is likely to come into the betting. The following are the tips of the leading sporting writers for the V.R.C. Meeting, which begins to-morrow : — " Ribbleden," in the Australian, goes for Pygmalion or The Seine to win the Newmarket Handicap, with Stromboli or Wild Rose next. For the Australian Cup he selects Zalinski or Portsea, with Megaphone and Highborn to fill places. " Asmodeus," in the Leader, takes The Seine, St. Blaize, and Reprisal, in that order, for the Newmarket Handicap, and for the Cup — G'Naroo, Portsea, and Oxide. Pygmalion is now first favourite for the Newmarket Handicap at 100 to 15, Bungebah 100 to 14, Wild Rose and Stromboli 100 to 11. Shamrock is decidedly easier. Barefoot, Spokesman, and Cremorne were supported at 100 to 3, at which price Gladstone and Magic Circle were trusted to win several thousands. Fortunatus bids fair to shorten considerably. Dunedin, February 25. The attendance at the second day of the D.J.C. Autumn Meeting was very good for the off day. Results : — City Stakes Handicap.— Wakawatea, 1 ; Day Dream, 2 ; Stepniak, 3. Scott to go to Australia, won the Trial Stakes, of 35 soys, five and a quarter furlongs, at the Aspendale Fark Meeting, near Melbourne, on the 11th inst, carrying 7-9, and beating a field of eight.
