The Payne Family
— ♦ — There was a crowded house last night in the Assembly Eooms to greet the above popular family. A well chosen programme was submitted to the audience in which the hand bells formed a prominent and pleasing feature. As violinists Miss Lizzie and Maude scored successes, the rendering of the " Mocking Bird " by the latter was deservedly applauded. Mr Steele was very successful in his rendering of the song " Comrades," his fine yoice being heard to advantage. His humorous song " Sour Krout," rendered with facial expression, brought down the house. Mr Steele's splendid performance on the musical glasses was a rare treat. In the violin solo " Blue Bells of Scotland," Miss Maude was greatly applauded. " Home Sweet Home " and " Sweet Chiming Bells " were beautifully rendered on the hand bells, and the audience were loud in their demands for a repetition. Of the concerted pieces "Oh, bush thee, my baby " was undoubtedly the best, and the humorous piece " The Gipsies Laughing" chorus deserves special praise. The trio " Nice young Maidens " by Misses Maude, Lizzie, and Alice was nicely rendered and called forth rounds of applause. Miss Maudo was heard to advantage in " The Flower Girl " for which she received a vociferous encore. Each of the instrumental numbers was loudly applauded.
