San Francisco, February 20, News has been received that the Tamerlane, a Hawaiian whaler, has been wrecked, and the captain and seventeen of the crew drowned. Sir C. Dilke has challenged Mr Stead, editor of the Review of Reviews, to contest a seat for Parliament with him Obituary — Lord Stafford, of influenza. William Perry and Co., merchants, of Sydney, are calling a meeting of their creditors. The liabilities are put down at £120,000, and ihe supposed surplus at £10,000, A violent earthquake has been felt at Larissa, in Thessaly. The Government Astronomer of Madras states that the sun spots will be concurrent with raintall. Smallpox is spreading in Bombay ; 25 deaths were reported in a week. The British Government tailoring contract has been sub-let to an Kast End firm paying Jews 35s per week. It is alleged that in the disposing of the contract the laws have been evaded and the question will be ventilated in Parliament. The Prince of Wales will shortly make a cruise in the Mediterranean Sea in the Royal yacht. Severe hurricanes, attended by a heavy fall of snow, have blocked railway traffic in England and Ireland. Rio de Janeiro, February 20. Latest intelligence from Ceara reports that the affairs in the province are much quieter. An Emigration Bill containing stringent provisions has been submitted to the Reichstag, and a clause inserted in which various societies are for'oiddeu to assist intended emigrants. Rome, February 21, His Holiness the Pope, in an Encyclical to the French bishops, deplores the yastness of the plot concocted by some men in France against Christianity. It repels the odious calumny that the Church seeks political domination of the State and urges on France the acceptance of a Republic, but insists that Catholics must unite in combatting the abuses of. legislation. The Pope's Encyclical states that the growth of religion in France is cccval with the grandeur of its military and political institutions, Paris, February 21. Tlie resignation of M. de Freycinet, Premier, has been accepted. The Anarchists in the city, who had intended to remain peaceful on May Day, have now decided to hold a tumultuous celebration on that day, in view of the retirement of the ministry of which M. Constans is a member. M. Laur, between whom and the Minister of the Interior a violent scene occurred in the Chamber a few days ago, is suing for assault. Madbid, February 19. The Spanish Government intend to inflict the same punishment for dynamite outrages as for murder.
