« (per press association.) London, February 20. The pig iron market is flat, at 40s. New Zealand cheese is quoted at 545. Compared with the closing rates at the December series, all classes of merino were £d lower, and fine crossbreds Id lower. Prices were on the average £d lower than those ruling at the December sales, but superior lambs brought Id more, although the top prices were below those obtained in 1886. The wool trade is depressed, and an early revival is not expected. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, have received the following cablegram, dated London, 20th instant : — Tallow is dull of sale. Fine mutton tallow is nominally worth 27s 3d per cwt. Quotations for beef tallow are unchanged since last report. Frozen meat. — Mutton market firm. Wellington and Canterbury is worth 4|d and 4fd per lb respectively. New Zealand lamb. — There is a good de> mand. Prime New Zealand lambs are worth per carcase 6|d per lb. Beef mar« ket. — Firm ; fore and hindquarters are worth respectively <td and 4fd per lb. Wool.— The sale closed this day. Since the close of last sales, super, medium, and inferior greasy merino, and medium greasy crossbred are to Id per lb lower. Washed super, medium, and inferior merino, and scoured merino super are Id lb lower. Medium and inferior scoured merino and fine greasy crossbred are Id to l£d per lb lower. Coarse greasy crossbred and medium and in* ferior greasy merino lamb are £d per lb lower. Other descriptions unchanged. The total quantity sold during the past sales is 286,000 bales, of which 167,000 have been taken for the Continent, and 16,000 for America. It is. estimated that 25,000 bales hare been held over for future disposal.
