INFLUENZA BAVAGES. A HEAVY DEATH BATE. OUTBKEAK OP OATABBH IN VIENNA. (Beceived, February 4, 10.20 a.m.) Lohdoit, February 3. Five hundred and seven deaths oc« cured in London last week from influenza. The death rate ici 41 per thousand. Succi, the faster, accompanied by a German mesmerist, will visit Australia shortly. Great difficulty was experienced in rescuing the crew of the steamship Eider on account of a furious sea raging at the time. The ship has become a total wreck. It is supposed the officers confounded the Needles' light with the Hurst Castle light. Two thousand more engineers hare struck. The origin of the strike was a quarrel between engineers and plumbers relative to a division of work. H.M.S. Victoria has been lightened to the extent of 1500 tons and the efforts of tugs succeeded in moving her half her length. It is hoped she will be floated off to-day. Lord Salisbury in his speech at Exeter Hall referring to the condition of agricultural labourers, said at present no Government could afford to propose to supplement the provision for old age as that experiment would be very risky. In answer to the allegations of undue profit fo contractors under the co-opera-tive system, the Public Works Department state that no contract is let to any one man ; all are let to gangs, one member of which is eleoted head man to deal with the Department, but all are on an equal footing. The employment of wages men is not allowed under any circumstances on the Eketahuna seotion, which is regarded as typical.
