(PHB UNITED PBKSS ASSOCIATION). Wellington, February 3. The twelfth session of the General Synod of the Church of the Province of New Zealand was opened this afternoon. Amongst the delegates arc the Most Reverend the Primate, and the Bishops of Christchurch, Auckland, Waipu, and Dunedm, Deans Jacob and Hovell, Archdeacons Harper, Fancourt, Clarke, L Williams, Dudley, 8. Williams, Mules, and Malcolm. Archbishop Harper gave notice to move " That in the opinion of this Synod it is desirable that the Education Act shall be amended so as to contain a provision for grants in aid of the maintenance of schools set on foot by any religious denomination provided that secular instruction given in such schools shall come up to the required standards and satisfy the Government Inspectors, and further that the Legislature be peti« tioned to the foregoing effect." Auckland, February 3. The Oaehunga ironworks have been stopped temporarily because of the slackness of employment for the men, who preferred, therefore, to stop work during the present hot weather than to be only partially employed. N glson, February 3. The school children's carnival in the Botanical Gardens to-day was a great success, children from all parts of the province attending. The Mayor received the following tele* gram from Lord Onslow from the Bluff ; — " Have just arrived from Sounds to learn how well your celebratiou of the Nelson Jubilee nent off, and congratulate you sincerely and wish every prosperity to kelson people."
