The party were banquetted at Stratford last night. The only difficulty in the way of making the road is the gorge at Tangamaraka river. The country is said to be suitable for pastoral purposes. Auckland, January 29. Frederick Yank strangled himself in Eden Terrace police station early this morning. He was locked up at 5 a.m. for robbing flower gardens and at 7.30 was fouud dead, having made a rope of his shirt and tied one end to a grating in the cell and the other to his throat. Dunkdin, January 29. John Donovan, foreman of the Ocean Beach tramway, was drowned this morning in the surf at Ocean Beach. Deceased was single, and about 35. William Cook, storekeeper, North East Valley, was found hanging in a closet early this morning. He had been in delicate health some time. He leaves a wife and family. Andrew Johnston, Permanent artilleryman at the Heads battery, was working a gun this morning when it rolled on him, crushing the shoulder and chest. He was insensible when extricated. The hearing of the petition lodged against the return of Mr Sandford, for [ Christchurch, will be taken on Thursday before Justices Dennisfcon and Williams. i A Chinese cook at Teriot Station was kicked in the abdomen by a horse, and died an hour afterwards. Mastkbton, January 29. A boxing match for .£25 a-side and the gate money, between Bob Matthews and | Arthur Francis, two well-known pugilists, took place in the Theatre Boyal last evening, and was witnessed by several hundred persons. The fight was a most desperate one, lasting nearly two hours. At the end of the 25th round Francis was compelled to give in, both hands being broken. Auckland, January 29. An elderly man named Moses Hamilton was found de^d on the road about eight miles from town yesterday. He was visiting a farmer there, and while returning from taking lunch to the harvesters, dropped dead after passing through the gate. A.t he inquest to-day the medical evidence as to the post mortum showed that death was the result of congestion of the lungs and syncope. Verdict accordingly. Chbistchubch, January 29. A Pontifical Mass of requiem for Cardinals Manning and Sirneoni was held in the Catholic Pro-Cathedral this morning.
