The Pahiatua Poisoning Mystery
The following appears in the Wood- • ville Examiner : — We understand that ' the police have in their possession ' further very important evidence which " did not come out at the inquest, but which will be available in the event of ' a magisterial enquiry being held. It iis now almost certain that there was more than one person in the diabolical : business, but of course it is not yet ' definitely known who these persons are, though the police have strong suspicions, grounded on a chain of circumstantial evidence. This chain of evidence is not yet complete enough to warrant an arrest, but it is understood the matter is steadily being cleared up, ond the police are gaining ground. Every well-wisher of society will wish the police every success in unearthing the •natter. The evidence at the inquest left no doubt about the poison been placed in the meat intentionally, and it is most unfortunate that Mrs Naylor could not identify the man she saw leave the house. That was the culprit, undoubtedly, but avli ether a man, or a woman in man's dress, remains to be discovered. It also remains to be discovered whether the poison was arsenic in pure form or in compound such as " Rough on Rats." The whole affair seems to have been the result of cold-blooded premeditation on the part of some person not yet sufficiently evident.
