The match between the Palmerstou Rifles and the Manchester Rifles was fired at the range yesterday. The weather was all that could be desired, and although a strong southerly breeze was blowing most of the day, it did not interfere much with the shooting as it was right on to the targets. In the afternoon when the firing was at the 500 yards range, the smoke from the surrounding bush fires was sometimes so dense that the target was almost invisible. This accounts for the small scores made at the final range. Lieut. Bray was in charge of the Manchester team and Sergt. Belf of the visitors. The first shot was fired by volunteer Hyde of the latter. Shortly after midday the teams adjourned to the building on the old race course where lunch was provided by Mr Lever of the Caf®i to which full justice was done. When the firing was concluded, Lieut. Kirton called for three cheers for the Falmerston men, which were heartily given, the compliment was warmly returned by the visitors, who threw in an extra cheer for Lieut. Kirton and the markers. An adjournment was then made to the Feilding Hotel where the visitors were entertained at tea. When the latter arrived at the railway station they were met by the Manchester team, who gave their guests three parting cheers as the train moved off, to which they vigorously replied. The match was altogether a pleasant one, and the visitors were much pleased jrith their trip even although fortune was against them. The following are the several scores : — Palmebston.

In favor of Feilding— 97 points.
