Kiwitea Sports

The above sports were held yesterday in Mr Mitchell's paddock, And those settlers and others who were present spent an enjoyable holiday. The weather was not hot, the sun being overclouded most of the day by smoke from large bush fires, and as the day went on the weather became rather cold. The course, as might be expected in a "land of stumps and logs," was rough, but notwithstanding this the number of' starters in the several events was good. The first race was started shortly after eleven and the last event was concluded about 7.15 in the evening. Mr Teinpler, the secretary, did a hard day's work in a courteous manner without the slightest friction with anyone. The starter, Mr J. Shirley, and the mem- ; bers of the committee, deserve praise for their efforts to make everything go smoothly. Mr Lever, of Feilding, supplied refreshments. Following are the results of the several events :— I. looyds Handicap. Ist prize, £2 ; 2nd, 10s; nomination, Is; acceptance, Is 6d. This event was run in two heats, re- j suiting :— First heat : M. Belfit, 2yds, 1'; Pleasants, 2yds, 2. A. Foster (3yds) and J. Watts (scr) also started. Second heat : A. S. Wilson (2yds), 1 ; W. Smith (syds), 2, J. Eobinson (3yds) and J. Foster (16ft 10' m with 12in handicap), 1 ; M. Belfit (16ft o^n). 2. Pleasants (16ft 2in), and A. S. Wilson (15ft 2in) also competed. 4. 440 yds Handicap. Lockyer also started. 6. High Jump Handicap. Ist prize, £1 ; 2nd, 5s ; nomination, Is ; acceptance, 6d. F. Foster (4ft 11 in with 3m handicap) and H. Dixon (4ft llin with 3in handicap) tied for first place and in the jump off F. Foster won. Pita Keremita jumped 4ft 9in. 7. 1-Mile Walking Handicap* Ist prize, £2 ; 2nd, 10s ; nomination, Is ; act ceptance, Is6d. J. Clark (scratch), J. H. Whishaw (10yds), C. Clark (30yds), W. J. London (40yds), and W. Smith (80yds) started. Resulting — J.Clark 1 W. J. London 2 C. Clark won this event, but was disqualified for running. 8. Boys under 10 years 75yds Handicap. Ist prize, 7s 6d ; 2nd, 2s 6d ; entry free. L. Law, 1 ; W. Mitchell and W. Duckworth ran a dead heat for second place. T. Gibson, W. Tappin, T. Taylor, W. Gibson, and S. Barrow also started. 9. High Jump for Horses. Ist prize, £2 ; 2nd, 10s ; entry, 2s 6d. J. Perry's Duncan (4ft 4in).,» 1 H. Taylor's Ormond 2 G. Kidd's Bob, H. Stewart's Tommy, Bailey's Taonui, and 0. Richardson (scratch), W. H. Poad (25yds) H. Battershill (25yds), J. Dixon (35yds) also started. Peatson won by about five yards from Donnelly, but was running easy, the third man being about 50yds behind. 12. Egg and Spoon Race (for boys) Han* dicap. Ist prize, 5s ; 2nd, 2s 6d ; entry free. This event was run in two beats, the final heat resulting— J. Perry, 1 ; 3?,' Taylor 2. A. Perry, S. Tappin, J. Taylor, S. Barrow, F. Roberry, W. Woods, A. Martin, A. Mills, H. Taylor, W. Duckworth, W. Tappin, C. Mills, R. Barrow; W. Mitchell, A. Banks, W. Taylor and J. Banks, also ran. 13. Hop, Step and Jump Handicap. Ist prize, £1 ; 2nd, ss ; nomination. Is ; acceptance, 6d. Pita Keremita (38ft 7in), 1 ; 0. C. Pleasants (37ft 2£in), 2. Joe, A. Foster, and M. Belfit also jumped, but were nowhere. 14. 100 Yards Handicap (district) for Amateurs only. Prizes to be of the value of £2 and £1 ; nomination, 2s ; acceptance. Is ; post entry. T. Perry, 10yds . < . . 1 Young, 10yds . . . . 2 J. Belfit, syds . . . . 3 Barrett, scr, 0. Pjjad, 3yds, Corkery, 3yds, and Knjvett syds, also started. 15. Half-mile Handicap. Ist prize, £2} 2nd, 15s ; nomination, 2s ; acceptance, Is. Peatson, 15yds, W. H. Poad, 12yds, and Donnelly 10yds were the starters and came in in. the order named, Peatson winning easily. 16. Three-legged Eace. Ist prize, £1 ; 2nd, ss ; entry, Is 6d. Wilson and Pleasants . . 1 W. H. Poad and Pita Keremita 2 17. Egg and Spoon Race on Horseback. Ist prize, 255 ; 2nd, 7s 6d ; entry, 2s. This race was ran in heats, and considerable amusement was caused by the efforts of the competitors to keep the eggs in th 9 spoons, some carrying them to within a few yards of the winning post and then losing the egg, having to dismount to pick it up again. Young, T. and H. Taylor, Barrow, T. and G. Perry, Munro, Banks, Martin, W. Poad, Curran, and London competed. The result of the final heat was ;— H. Taylor, 1 ; W. Poad, 2. 18. Tilting at the Ring. Ist prize, 30s ; 2nd, 10s ; entry, 2s. W. Poad, 1 ; J. Munro, 2. W. Banks, C. Young, W. Mitchell, H. Curran, A. Barrow, H. Bennett, J. Shirley, 3. W. Stewart, J. Scringeour, F. Duckworth* and J, Barrow also coaapfetfed. A steeplechase for a sweepstake of 5s each with £1 added wound up the proceedings. For this event five started, viz-, J. Munro, H. Stewart, P. Baer, H. Ben. nefct, and E. Perry. When about onethird of the course had been run Munro's horse fell and his rider was stunned. Fortunately he was not severely injured and after resting for a while he was able to go home. The race resulted in a win for H. Bennett, P. Baer second.
