The Zeitang asserts that Emperor William's speech, on the occasion of the administration of the oath of allegiance to the recruits of the guard, really contained the following:— •' Re - emits, you bare, before priest and altar sworn fealty to me. You are too joung to understand the true meaning of the words in which, you have sworn, but be diligent in following the instructions given you. You have, my children, sworn allegiance. That means you have given your services to me, bod* and soul. You hare only one enemy, and that his my enemy. In the present socialist agitation, I may order you, which God forbid, to shoot down your relafciyes — your brother.", even your, parents — and you must obey without a mnrraur."
