It is stated that the Uriwera Natives, who have so many .yearß isolated themselves from Europeans, have given permission for survey of 200,000 acres of land in their territory at a point inland from Ruatoke in the Whakatane district. The land, it is suggested, is to be purchased by the Government. Constable William Grey, of the City Police Force, has been promoted to the rank of a second class constable, for his courage in saving the life of a boy who fell into the harbour early one morning recently. The result of 12 days' crushing of 550 tons from the Waihi Mine is a return of bullion of the value of £1170. Dunbdin, January 19. Canon Howell, referring to the diminishing revenue at St. Matthew's, said if it showed no signs of improvement by Easter he would place his resignation in the hands of the Bishop, in order to allow the parish to obtain an unmarried incumbent. "Wellington, January 20. Mr J. H. Heaton who resigned his position as member of the ftarbonr Board and as J. P., because they were obtained for him by Mr Fisher, M.H.R., to whom he is now opposed in politics, has been re-appoinlcd a member of the Harbour Board by Government. The Monoyvai left Frisco for Auckland on the 12th inst,, fire days late. She is not expected to reach the colony before February 2nd.
