It is being saia he is ashamed to face the pakehas after the Poverty Bay atrocities. Major Kemp still remains at Parakino, together with a large number of Natives, who are being sum ptuously entertained by the Wanganui River tribes. The meeting has no polili cal significance, and is simply a layish and ostentatious display of Maori hospitality. Marton, January 11. Mr G. L. Cook, Engineer in charge of the Mangaonoho Eailway contract near Hunterville, having on behalf of Government given Mr A. Dalziell, owner of the land through which the railway is being constructed, notice of the intention of Government to temporarily occupy part of his property for the purpose of a roadway, Mr Dalziell intends to contest their power to do so, and has issued a summons against Mr Cook under section 137 of the Public Works Act, 1882. The case has arisen out of the refusal of Dalziell to allow public access to the railway by his private roadway. The hearing has been adjourned for a month. Wellington, January 10. A very sudden death occurred on board the steamer Wakatu at 6 o'clock last night. John Action, a wharf lumper, was engaged loading the vessel, when he was observed to fall, and expired in a few moments. The lonic, from London, arrived in pQft last night. Landy met with a shocking accident at the Kauri Timbpr Company's mill this afternoon, hts left hand being completely cut off by ■ a circular saw. He was the only support of a widowed mother. Nrcw Plymouth, January 11. The total quantity of butter exports from the breakwater only, for the four weeks ending January 2nd, was nearly forty-sis tons. In the same period a much larger quantity went by rail to Wellington, so' that tho total export for the period is considerably over 100 tons. Auckland, January LO. A little girl, four years old, daughter of Mr Jolp O'Brien, of Kudtuna, was so severely burned, her clothes having | caught fire, that she died after lingering i for three hours. i Paljierston Noeth. January 11. A live male infant, about a fortnight old, was found on the doorstep of Dr. Satchell's house on Saturday nightAlongside it was a bundle, containing a quantity of ba-by's clothes and food.
