Cr Oartbew stated that the time had arrived when somo action should be taken with regard to procuring a water supply for the township of Feilding. Two ways were open, one from the river which would probably cost thousands of pounds ; the other plan was by sinking an artesian well. He had taken great ■ interest m the matter and had collected statistic*—which he liid before the Council — showing the cost and the results obtained by the sinking of artesian wells in the neighbouring districts. He said Mr ■ Martin had' given his opinion in the presence of several members of the Council as to the probability of a supply of water being produced, and he considered there ■was every prospect of tapping a supply at a depth of 60 feet. A well recently sank on Mr Sanson's farm, at Campbelltown, was giving a flow of 3,600 gallons every 24 hours. With- a view to the health of the town and district, much of the water now used is unfit for drinking ; .purposes. As an instance of the importance of this subject it was asserted that before the supply of artesian water Chrißtchurch had the highest death rate of any town m the colony, and after the supply had been obtained it was the loweßt, thus proving conclusively the sanatory advantages to be derived from . the carrying out of this scheme. ' Pr §knd,nWds AyptUd support the resolution, as the Fire Brigade would be useless without a supply of water. Ors Lethbridge, S. J. Thompson, aud Goodbehere spoke in its favour. ..'Crß>Gtould and Chamberlain had intended ijo oppose \he l^solu^on. on the, ground of .expanse,* but a.fter hearing the &tatements of Cr Carthew, they decided to give it their support, ' Or J. ■ 0. Thompson, and the Mayor also epoke in its fayour. The Major complimented Cr Carthew upon his efforts in this matter, and hoped the result would be satisfactory to all concerned. The following resolutions, of which, notice of motion had been given, were then Proposed by Cr Carthew, seconded by Cr S. J.
