Tillett stated that; for torty years Mr W, E. Gladstone had boon in "a most favourable position to help the labourers, and yet he had done nothing in that direction. Mr Tillett also said that Mr Gladstone had never mitigated the Conspiracy Laws. ' ■ December 25. A railway collision took place at Lowestoff, in Suffolk, to»day, in which three passengers were killed and thirty injured. The heavy fog prevented the signals being seen. The fog still hangs round London, and 25 deaths from drowning in the Docks are reported. December 27. Prince Christian was shot in the eye to-day, while out shooting with the Duke of Connaught and Prince Henry of Battenburg, at Osborne. The injury is only of a slight character. A dropped match caused a slight fire in a theatre at Gateshead during the performance of a pantomime, A fearful panio resulted, in which nine children in the gallery were trampled todeath. Tbe check taker vainly attempted to stop the rush, and was himself killed. Later. During the panic at the fire in Gateshead Theatre roughs pillaged the actors' property. Singapore, December 26, A rising among Malay miners in Raub, Pahang, has taken place, and thirteen policemen are in the hands of the rioters, two of whom have been shot. A detachment of Sikhs has been sent to suppress the riots. It is believed that the miners are safe. San Francisco, December 23. The proposal to quarry the Broken Hill Proprietary Mine down to a 200 ft level is most adversely criticised by mm« ing authorities in San Francisco. Washington, December 25. Mr Springer, Chairman of Committee of Ways and Means, proposes to introduced a Bill making imported wool free, and not charging a tariff on woollen goods. Paws, December 25. Two Englishmen hare been sentenced one to fifteen and the other to two months' imprisonment for attempting to obtain patterns of French rifles. St. PkteeBBOBGH, December 25. The Czar has imprisoned Baron Shadelberg and deprived him of his rank, owing to his cruelty while Governor of Esthonia. December 27. It is stated that tbe Czar is likely to banish Baron Sergius owing to his alleged tyranny in Moscow, though it is believed that the real motive is that the Caar is suspicious of his ambitious designs. Forster, the Chilian judge who has been conducting the inquiry into the .charges 'against the police of having 111---used sailors belonging to the American warship Baltimore, has finished his labours. The American sailors admitted that they were drunk. There tvas very little evidenco adduced in support of the charge of ill-treatment-Stockholm, December 2&. The King of Sweden is suffering from influenza. 'Berlin, December 25. Count Caprivi is inquiring from the German Chamber of Commerce if it it opportune to abolish the duty on Eng - lisa cotton yarns. Pebth December 25. A rich gold reef, yielding 30ozs to the ton, has been stuck in the Home Rule claim on the Murchisongoldfiield. Some of the best stone taken out of the reef gave 90ozs, while the poorest yielded six ounces. 2Tew Yobk, December 26. The Buffalo and St. Louis express trains collided to-day at Hastings. A brakesman was sent to stop the latter train, and it is alleged that he delayed doing so by going to an hotel for a drink. Ten persons were killed and fifty injured. Many were scalded owing to the bursting of the boiler of the St. Louis express: Rio de Janeiro* December 29. The Government of Pernambuco have taken a firm stand in suppressing the riots and have expelled several of those suspected of complicity. Seventeen rioters were killed in the conflict with the Government troops. Madrid, December 26. During midnight Mass on. Christmas Eve four bombs were exploded in a church in Valencia. The altar was wrecked, and several of the congregation were injured. Two arrests have been made. . ;
