Beid, W. G. Haybittle, B. Gosling, J. Bartholomew, G. Lethbridge. Trea* surer— Mr C. Bray. Handicapper —Mr J. M. Copeland. Secretary — Mr H. L. SherwiU. The Sixteenth Annual Meefinifixff fie Feilding Athletic Sports was held on Saturday last, ilhe' 26th * instant, JanS proved that the popularity of this gathering is still on~ the inorease..- Thejnorning was cloudy with a strong Vhreetb blowing from the N.W. -and about the middle of the forenoon ram began to falj in drizzling showers,' but the'weafhjer cleared up by noon; and the <afternoon~ turned out very warm. Jlhe attendance was not so large as usual in the forenoon, as but the skies cleared the lawn began, to ,£ll with ladies so that by two o'clock from 1800 to 2000 were on the ground." Almost every part of the colony sent'repreTeentatives. About 10.30 the first race was started and the other events were got off as soon as the competitors could be brought to face the starter. Everything was conducted in r an orderly, manner, and the visitors were not slow in this, being loud in tfa'eir praises' of°tne general management of the Sports. < <The Committee deserye every praise for-Jhiß state of affairs, and the secretary, MrtH. L. SherwiH, assisted -byisir^O.^Bray, junior, the treasurer^' deserve '''special mention for the courteous aha gentlemanly manner in which they' performed a hard day'B 'work. The /.starter,' Mr Hartgill, assisted by Mr Pj /Thomson and Mr W. Beid, proved., by their firmness that they were the right^men in the right place. And Mr Copeland;' the 'handicapper, won golden 'opinions, by the excellence of his work. .^The, results amply proved that the criticism passed, on his work "by one who, was "a winning performer himself " (" Hutch ••)*■ ' were* %s undeserved as they were inaccurate. On every side Mr Copeland 3 received congratulations^ from;: competitors, |as|well b» others whose praise was as honestly "given as it was well earned. The Feilding Brass Band played a selection of pieces with their usual skill and taste. Mr J. Smitif, was v the caterer, and succeeded in pleasing everyone of his numerous customers. It is almost needless* to say the affair was a financial success.
