There has been a great increase in the deposits in the Government Savings Bank, due to the recent suspensions. £77,000 was deposited m that institution during the past fortnight. For the first time on record the credit balance of the Savings Bank is over two millions. The trial of Mr Matthias Larkin, late secretary of the South Melbourne Permanent Building and Investment Society, and Cleary, late accountant, for defrauding the Society of a large sum of money, is proceeding. The Court is crowded by victims, who assert that they have been reduced to beggary. Mr Larkm has filed his schedule. His liabilities are set down at £18,000, and assets at £13,000. Sydney, December 17. The Government are inviting tenders for the lease of a large tract of waste land at Jervis Bay, suitable for the cullivation of flax and hemp. A company is being formed to introduce the culture of these fibres. December 18. The Eotokino has been spoken about fifty miles from Sydney with her shaft broken. The Hauroto left at daybreak to pick her up. Brisbane, December 17. A terrific cyclone has been experienced on Richmond Downs. The whole town is wrecked, and the telegraph lines destroyed.
