The R.M.S. Coptic will arrive in Wellington to-morrow evening from England via way ports. The hay crop is unusually heavy this year, besides being more than a month earlier than last season. We have to acknowledge receipt of Typo for October. It is behind time, but the editor expects to " pull up " to date in the next two or three issues. On Sunday afternoon very heavy rain fell in the back country. The showers were described as quite tropical. Hardly a drop of rain fell on the plain, A meeting of the Pohangina Small Farm Association will be held in the Colyton Hall on Saturday next, the 19th instant, at 3 p.m., to receive report of deputation. The soles of boots or shoes may be made waterproof by melting a little bee's wax and mutton suet, and rubbing some slightly ou the edges of the sole oyer the stitches. Typo gives us a kindly par, and says : — " The Feilding Star has come out in an enlarged form. It deserves to prosper, and has the goodwill of all its contemporaries." Thanks. On Saturday last a first-class Polled Angus bull arrived here for Mr L. Holden, of Makino. It was bought in Christchurch ior Mr Holden by the agent of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company. At the R.M. Court yesterday, before Messrs Haybittle and Kir ton, J.P.s, J. T. James, farmer of Stanway road, Makino, was charged with being of unsound mind. On the evidence of Drs Charlton and Johnston, Constable Tuohey, and his brother, J. P. James, the accused was ■ committed to the Wellington asylum. The reigning sensation in London at present is an extraordinary leap mnde by a man named Mitram Nigg. who jumps 205 feet from the top of the Aquariumand lands on his feet on the bare floor. He wears the costume of an Atneneau Indian and his rapid descent is broken by some patent arrangement invisible to the audience. All London is running to see the startling feat, and to discuss what it is that breaks his fall. The special lots bought by Cobbe and Dnrraijh for the ChrisLmas trade, include all the sample suits oE the Kaiapoi Co.'s representative ; also, 20 heavy English :U ts at 27s 6d — together with a big lot of English samples of clothing and shirts. Also, the entire set of silk handkerchief samples of a London house — 1 J 7 different colors and patterns at from 1/6 to 6/6 each. These goods being bought at sample prices, will be sold cheap. The funeral of the late Mr Authony Brca:lbent took place on Sunday afternoon last, the cortege, which comprised some 16 vehicles and 20 horsemen, leaving the residence of the deceased, in Beattie street, shortly after 2 o'clock. The Rev. H. M. Murray officiated at the grave, and after the recital of the burial service he referred in feeling terms to the worth and faith of the late Mr Broadbent. The coffin was covered with wreaths and immortelles, sent by relatives and friends of the deceased. Mr A. Eade was the undertaker. We hear that some landowners in the Napier district hare declared their intention, if the Government persist in their financial policy, to not only curtail their expendi turc in improving and working their es« tates, but also to stop the practice of pro vidinc free board and lodgings for the army of swaggers perennialy peregrinat* ing through out the country. On some stations from ten to twenty men per night have, on an average, been thus provided for, at about a co.-t of £300 a year. It is only natural that landowners should thus protect themselves now thai the Government have marked them, as a class, as a prey for the public. — Waipawa Mail. A very serious gun accident happened on the Harbor Board Block on Saturday afternoon. A young man named John Cq wdrey, whose parents reside at Halcombe, accompanied by two other young men, was out pig-hunting. The dog had bailed up a good .ei;jfid boar, but Cowdrey would not fire until one of his companions, who carried the knife, camo up, The boar made a rush, and was again stopped by tjie dog. To get into a better position, Cowdrey pushed through the underscrub with his left hand, carrying his gun at the short trail. Apparently the hammer was caught by a supplejack, for the weapon was discharged and tho contents sent through Cowdrey's left aruj, just above the wrist. The shot went in like a bullet, but the aperture made in their exit was about three inches in length ami half that in width. The young fellow showed great spirit, and walked for sonic distanco out of the bush, but presently ho fell exhausted from loss of blood, although a stout ligature had been placed above tlie wound. A stretcher was made, on which ho was brought to Mr Bartholomew's mill, whoro Mr James bound up thu wound again. 110 was then tnken to Mr Kilgour's, in whoso trap ho was driven to Feilding, wheio ho was put in the charge of Dr Charlton. A consultation was hold with Drs Johnston and Sorley, and as amputation might be necessary the patient was sent on yesterday morning to the Wanganuj Hospital, i

Lieutenant Gorton, who was severely wounded in the recent engagement in Afghanistan, is a nephew of Col. Gorton. Mass will be celebrated in St. Bridget's Church next Sunday at 8 o'clock, and also on Christmas morning at 8 o'clock. We learn from the Manawatu Times that owing to the persistent efforts of Mr J. G. Wilson, M.H.R., the rates on the Wellington -Manawatu line are likely to be reduced. Captain Edwin telegraphs : — Weather forecast for 24 hours from 9 a.m. to-day — Warnings for northerly gales and rain after from 10 to 20 hours have been sent to all places. On Saturday next a trotting match will take place between horses owned by Messrs Pickering and Jenkins. Distance one mile, stakes L 5 a side. The course will probably be on the Kimboltonßoad, The funeral of the late Mrs Williamson, of Nannested's Road, who died ye 3» terday, will take place to-morrow at noon in accordance with a notice published elsewhere by Mr W. G. Shearer, undertaker. The chairman ofjthe Pahiatua County, Mr Bolton, was in Feilding yesterday, and held a conference with the chairman of the Manchester Road Board, Mr F. Y. Lethbridge, on matters connected with the Gorge road. Mr Charles Wickham informs us that next week he will start running a cab in Feilding. The vehicle has been purchased in Wanganui, and will arrive on Friday next. We commend Mr Wiekham for his enterprise. Mr S. Svendson has now received his Christmas supply of ladies' and gentlemen's shoes, and children's boots and shoes of all kinds, for the Christmas season, full particulars of which will appear in our next issue. There are now seveuty-two Freemasons' Lodges holding under the New Zealand Constitution, which are numbered on the roll according to the dates of their respective original charters. No. 1 Lodge is " Ara," Auckland. A wire from Wellington says : -At a meeting of Jewish residents to form a committee to assist their distressed coreligionists in Russia, about L2OO was collected in the room. The Chairman (Mr Jacob Joseph) subscribed 100 guineas. In another column Dr Johnston thanks the officers and men of the Fire Brigade for the valuable assistance they rendered on the occasion of the fire on Saturday morning. He has also left at our office a cheque for L 22s as a slight token of his estimation of their survices. The revenue so far received under the Property Tax is considered very satisfactory by the Department. The amount collected at the Post Offices throughout the colony up to lOtli inst. and in Wels lington up to ihc 11th is £195,858. All large payments are not due till the second instalment on 4th February next. The concert to be given on Friday next in the Assembly Eooms, by the scholars attending the Feilding State School, promises to be in every respect a great success. The action song of the " Fox and the Goose " must be seen to be appreciated. The second part will be composed of songs, duets, and recitations by ladies and gentlemen amateurs who are already well known to Feilding audiences (with some additions to their number of really clever performers). Eyerybody is going, so punctuality will be necessary to secure good places. On Saturday night there was a meeting held at Cheltenham to elect officers for the Kiwitea Sports, to be held on 22nd January, Mr Templer presided. Messrs Gibson, Burrow, Shirley, Duckworth, Taylor, Church, Meehan, Cumin, Day, Pitcher, Lowe, Thomas, Martin, Johnston (2), Mitchel, and Templer were elected to fi van the committee to carry out the sports. Mr Templer was appointed Secretary, and Mr Mitchell treasurer, The latter reported he had .£ll 6s in hand from last year. Mr Copeland will be arranged with to act as handicapper. At a meeting of the Pohangina Small Farm Association held at Ashurst on Friday evening, the members whose names were in for the Salisbury Block objected to the inclusion in its boundaries of 1,60u acres, which arc situated on the east side of the Pohangina, and which was asserted by some of the members present to be very rough country. The secretary was directed to write to the Government and request that this piece be loft out of the block, and that an equal area be added on to the north - em end of it. — Advocate. The bustle and excitement in front of the Centre Block for the last ten days has been something unusual for Feilding. We understand the big cash bonus of two shillings in the pound, which Mr Hamilton, the well-known draper and clothier, is now allowing, on all cash purchases of ten shillings and upwards until the end of the present month, is being thoroughly appreciated by everyone who has visited his store. In addition to the above liberal bonus, Mr Hamilton is offering up to Christmas part of a manufacturer's stock of silk handkerchiefs, whjch he has just purchased (through their agents), and which are very suitable for Christmas presents. Amongst the lot are a very superior line which Mr Hamilton is offering at one shilling each, which ought to be seen by eyeryone who knows what yalue is.
