Hospital Board

A meeting of the Palmerston Hospital Board was lield ia the Council Chambers on Thursday. Present — Messrs Snelson (in the chair), Taylor, Haybittle, Lethbridge, G rant, McKenaio, and Park. Mr Snelson read the notice from the Government authorising him to act as Cliairnian at the present meeting, which bad also been gazetted. He referred to the different amounts which had been' raised for the purpose of building the hospital, and stated that at the present time the Board has the sum of £914 9s lid to commence operations with- It would be for the Board to consider whether the Government should not" be asked to supplement the amounts raised. The Chairman then gave an outline of what had been done by the Committee in reference to calling for designs, and asked the Board to endorse the Committee's action so that the work could go on. He hoped the Board would appoint Mr Keeling as interim Secretary, because he was well acquainted with, the work to be done. • '>-."'■■ Mr Taylor proposed Mr P. Lethbridge as Chairman of the Hospital and Cliaaitable Aid Board, . . . ■ Seconded by Mr Grant and carried. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr Snelson for his services. Mr Lethbridge then took the chair, and in doing so said the Board was in a fair position thanks to the efforts of the PaU merston people, and if Government granted a subsidy on the L 914 which they had at piesent, the Board would have a fair start. He was satisfied they would work together, and suggested that the meeting proceed to elect an interim secretary. The suggestion made by Mr Snelson that Mr Keeling be appointed interim secretary until March was adopted, but a discussion arose aa to the amount to be paid Mr Keeling for his services during that time. Mr Keeling said he was quite agree* able to do whatever work was necessary until then, and the Board could decide what remuneration he should reeaive. It was then decided to adjourn to 2 o'clock so that the question of salary could be considered in ilip meantime. Proposed by Mr Haybittle, seconded by Mr Taylor, That the ordinary meetings of the Charitable Aid Board beheld on the first Thursday in March, June, September, and December.— Carried. Mr R. B. MoKenzie brought before the j Board the case of David Young, who was a great sufferer from rheumatic gout. He moved that application be made to the Government for permission to admit the man to the sanatorium at Rotorua. The motion was agreed to. The Hospital business was the resumed. The Chairman pointed on l , that there was a sum of L9li 9s lid, available for building purposes, in the hands of the Palmerston .borough Council and trus» tees. The people of Palmerston North deserved the thanks of the district for what they had done. Mr R. B. McKenzie brought forward a motion to ask the Government department for plans of hospitals already made, if any were in existance, but he met with no support. On the motion of Mr Haybittle, seconded by Mr Park, the action of the preliminary committee is calling for corns petitive designs for the Hospital was endorsed. On the motion of Mr Haybittle, the thanks of the Board were accorded to the Palmerston Borough Council for their assistance in Hospital matters, and it was decided to ask that the funds avail* able be handed over to the BoardOn the motion of Mr Grant, seconded by Mr It. B, McKenzie, it was decided to bank with the Colonial Bank. Proposed by Mr Haybr.tle, seconded by Mr McKenzie and carried, That Mr Park be appointed Treasurer, and that the Chairman and Mr Grant countersign cheques It was decided to write to Dr McGregor for the purpose of ascertaining what steps were^necessary with, respect to separation from the Wanganui Board. The meeting then adjourned. :
