The Recent Earthquake
♦ A very severe earthquake was felt here yerterday morning at 4.40. It was preceded by a loud rumbling noise which awakened and alarmed everyone. The shock continued for several seconds and was tbe heaviest experienced since the shake of 1881. Beyond stopping a few clocks, and smashing some crockeryware, no damage was done. After the tremblings of the fii-st shock ; there was a second and slighter one a few minutes after five o'clock. The shock was felt throughout the North Island.
