In an article on the " Profits of Fruit Culture in California " by ex-Governor Sheldon, he quotes figures from which it would seem that he is within the mark in saying that if a young man of twenty-one plants an orange orchard he will have a comfortable income in six or eight years, and afterwards a princely revenue for the rest of his life, and for the lives of his children. Vineyards yield about £20 per acre where winegrape9 are grown, raisin-grapes yield from £30 to £80 acre, walnuts from £50 to £80 an acre, figs yield £120 net on twothirds of an acre, while lemons yield at the rate of £150 per acre. The net yield of prunes is about £100 an acre; apricots the net yield is about £80 an acre. Oranges bear from £70 to £200 an aero. Although we cannot grow oranges in this part of New Zealand, yet the other fruits indicated may be cultivated to perfection. AVhat has been done in America may surely bo don© in New Zealand. ____________
