Bamage, who rode Megaphone in the Melbourne Cup, says that but for the accident Strathmore would have been certain to be first, and Megaphone second. A sporting writer in the Sydney Bulletin, writing about Malvolio's win in the Melbourne Cup, says : — " If the Melbourne Cup were to be run over again next week the books would probably lay 5 to 2 against Malvolio repeating the trick, seeing that he proved unable in the AllAged Stakes to make a concession of nine pounds on their original handicap to Highborn, the fourth in the Cup. No line of reasoning can make the " form " look quite up to the average, or upset the argument that Carbine, fit and well, would have donkey -licked this year's field with the same ease as last year."
