Of course sonic of the country members are per- (■ feqtionj~ and there is no reason why r> they should attend the meetings of a • Mutua]L^J[mprovement Society, and 'tKeii there are others who know that neighbours are past all hope of '-improvement, so they don't attend. However, I am getting away from my ' story; : A meeting was held and was 1■; Very much enjoyed by those present. Fifteen new members were elected and four nominated for admission as - 'members.' The debate of the evening • " Is perpetual lease perferable to freehold?'' was opened by Mv H. H. arid he argued in the affirmative. Mr W. Morton, W. 0. London, . jancLW. E; Petry followed, all three declaring in favor of freehold if doeired. The debate was adjourned. An'essay on "Burns the Scottish Poet,'* was '"the next item. Mr H. H. Pitcher, the .essayist, explained, unnecessarily, -that he was not :ti^': : a^Scpt9hman.;- The fact vras quite -evident, but whatever might be said of She delivery, the essay itself was - : T admirable. -' It was an interesting aid instructive sketch of the Scottish , Bard's Jife, character, and works. MtPitchei's paper -was well received, andhe certainly deserves great credit Jor his effort. The proceedings ter : tainated at 1.0 o!clock, and the meeting adjourning .until December 9 th.
