♦. LP'Jtt UNITED PBESS ASSOCIATION. J Sydney, Noyember 2. During a quarrel in a dincing saloon in Newcastle a man named Burridge shot a girl named Murchie in the head with a revolver. The girl is in a critical con» dition. A steamer, name unknown, collided with the s.s. Port Caroline in Port Phillip, and tore a hole five feet long in her, leaving her stem sticking in the Caroline. Tho Australian Bunking Company has suspended payment, but it is hoped only temporarily. The last balance-sheet issued by the Company disclosed a satisfactory state of affairs, and a dividend of 7 per cent was declared. Tho capital of the Company is £250,000, £105,000 of which is paid up. Jas. Peter Howe, M.L.A., late chairman of the Australian Mercantile Loan and Guarantee Comyany, and Mr Jas. Miller, a merchant, late director of the same company have been sentenced to seven years' imprisonment each. Bbisbane, This Day. On the voyage from Sydney the A.U.S.N, Co.'s steamer Eurinibla collided with the barquefcine Lismore off Richmond river. The latter vessel being almost cut in two. The crew, with the captain's wife and a boy, scrambled on board the steamer, but Captain White, and Shepherd, the cook, went down with the vessel. Those on the steamer declare no lights were visible on the Lismore until three minutes before the collision.
