Replying to a question as to whether or not he would communicate with the New Zealand Government with a view to effecting a reduction in cable rates, Sir Henry Parkes said no reduction could be looted for unless the colonies agreed to renew the subsidy, which New Zealand in 1886 refused to do, October 16. Mr Peter Howe, M.P., and Mr James Miller, formerly Directors of the Australian Mercantile Loan and Guarantee Company, who were arrested on the29tb ult., at the instance of the Crown, on a charge of conspiring to defraud in con* nection with the transactions of the company, have been committed for trial. The man named Eyerad, who was accused oferiminal assaults on females, and which had mystified,' the police for some comsiderable time, has been found guilty and sentenced to imprisonment for life. Mklbouene, October 16A woman named Scarsbrook attempted to poison herself and her three children with strychnine. One child is dead, but the others are likely to recover. The woman is insane.
