The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15, 1891. The Rival Jockey Clubs

«. Wjtii regard to the difficulty between the Palmerstou and Feilding Jockoy Clubs created by the greed of the former and the weakness of the selfstyled Metropolitan Club at Wangaum', tho Manawatu Times of yesterday says, in explanation : "As to the assertion that the Manawatu Kacing Club h;is been unsportsmanlike, we can assure the Feilding Club that the Miiiifwvatu Club li'id no oilier tlioilf/Jit in, their mhuli th-in that of 2^'cventini) the Club bcbui invoiced in financial difficulties, an hitherto had been the case. fhe March meeting had always re-

ultecl in a large loss to the Club, and he majority thought that a two clays' oeeting at Christmas would produce >etter financial results than a one lay's meeting on each of two different periods. In the desire to meet the Feilding Club, however, they were billing to retain the old practice of having two separate meetings, and endeavored to find a suitable date which would not lead them into a loss, but it was impossible to find such a date. They too, had in their minds that the Feilding Club would suffer no loss by holding their meeting another day later during the holiday week, and we sincerely hope the Feilding Club will, before it is too late, come to » similar conclusion, and that this unfortunate contretemps will be satisfactorily disposed of." The passage we have printed in italics shows clearly enough that so long as the Manawatu Club made money they were quite indifferent as to the means. The Manawatu Club threw out the challenge "Let the fittest survive " and surely they cannot blame the Feilcling Club for taking it up.
