(per press association.) Paljierston Nobth, October 12. A six.roomed house, occupied by Mr Boon, three miles from Palmerston, was burned down yesterdy. There was no insurance. A man, arrested at Shannon this morning, jumped off the train near Longburn and escaped into the bush. He was captured nfter a chase of a mile or so. His nnme his Joseph Talentino Bourke, and he was arrested on a warrant of commitment to New Plymouth goal for two months for disobeying an order of the Court. This Day. At the inquest into the recent large fire in the Square the jury returned an open verdict. No evidence could be obtained as to how the fire originated. Tologa Bay, This Day. The Hon Mr Beeves has proceeded ' north from here. His business 13 a general inspection of the district on behalf of the Cabinet. Native schools and laud will be inspected, and ho will visit the Maoris of the Waipu district who are stricken with a typhoid fever epidemic. The minister left at thesame time is endeavouring to make himself acquainted with the grievous native land difficulties which now prevail along the coast. Wanganui, This Day. Francis Trevelyan Kenny indicted m the Supreme Court for maliciously setting fire to the Commercial Hotel, pleaded not guilty. He is defended by Mr Barmcoat. Mr Fitzher-bert prosecutes for the Grown. Fifteen witnesses are to be examined. The case is expected to last all day. October 12. Harry Laing, tho pugilist, and "William Noble were charged this morning with stealing £230 from the person of one Joseph Abbot. Mr Fitzherbert appearec for the Crown, Mr Coates for Noble, anc Mr Hogg for Laing. Mr Fitzherbert summed up the case for the Crown and after the address of the counsel for the defence His Honor summed up, The jury returned a vordict of " guilty. " Sentence was deferred till Wednesday*. t Wellington, This Day. The inquest on Mrs Backhouse, who died some days ago under suspicious circumstances, was resumed this morning. The result of the examination of the medicine by the Government Analyst was of a negative character and proved nothing. The jury returned an open yerdiet, The Eepresentation Commission finish to-day. They havo found it necessary to mako considerable alterations in the boundaries in placos where the census royealed a largo shifting population, especially on th» West Coast of this Island. The revenuo for tho last six months is woll up to tho mark on tho whole. Tho Customs shows an incroaso, and tho best mouths for the beer duty havo to come. The railway receipts suffered materially by tho diminution in rhe gram traffic, but are improving, and with tho summer passenger traffic, tho Commissioners have good hopes of producing their eslitimated net revenue of £414,000 for tho year.
