Upper House Appointments
+ It may now bo taken for granted that the Government will, during the recess, recommend His Excellency to make a number of " calls " to the Legislative Council. The Lyttelton Tjmes, which may be presumed to speak with authority, gays that "the Government would be stupid to refrain from using their power. Every candid and honorable man must admit, whether he agrees with the policy of the Government or not, that the Government are pledged to their policy, and must play the game which will give a victory to that policy. Nobody can expect Ministers to agree with the • Economist's' and other shallow critics who deplore that the Government policy has prevented the absentee proprietors of this country from receiving enormous reinforcements, and sayed the public credit from the disaster that follows the inflations in which investments are made in colonial properties. Every Government naturally believes in its own policy, and does its best to make it law. There is only one way for tlie G-overmnent to secure that result. It is to make a number of fresh appointments to the Council. . . . We hope the Government will not follow the plan of being thankful for small mercies, for unexpected work, or for expected idleness. When the Liberal side of politics cannot find six better men (on the whole) than the last batch, it will be time to sing the lament of the departed Liberal party." — Dunedin Star.
