The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1891. Fire Brigade
Although the funds at the disposal of the Borough Council would not allow of any grant being made to assist the local Fire Brigade, to supplement that already given, we do not for a moment believe there was any intention on the part of the City Fathers to discourage the officers and men of the Brigade, who have already done such useful service. On the contrary, every act in the part of the ! Council has been to encourage and foster the Brigade by all legitimate means in their power. From what was said at the Council table, we guther that one chief difficulty, apart from the want of funds, lay in the inability of the present officers of the Brigade to give a detailed account of She receipts and expenditure of their predecessors. Of course the Council cannot look tab closely after the ratepayers money, and the greatest caution should be exercised iv its expenditure, but in this case as soon as the money passed from the hands of the Council their responsibility ceased, and the control of the money became vested in the officers of the Brigade, who iv their turn are only responsible to the public. We cannot speak too highly of the Brigade as at present constituted, and us they have already saved from destruction property which may be valued at ft sum of money far greater than has been contributed by the ratepayers in any shape or form, wo hold that they have done good service, and their past performances nre sufficient guarantees of what they may be relied on lo do should they, unfortunately, be called upon to act on any future occasion. We woiiid aisu like to point out th.-.t where a number of young men com- . bine together to do wuik for the common welfare, for which they can rw- i
—f~ ceive no monetary reward, and earn but little fame, their fellow citizens should do everything in their power to -assist them, and by judicious favorable comment give encouragement iv well doing.
