The Feilding Star. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 1891. Outstanding Bates
By a resolution passed at the last meeting of the Borough Council, as reported in another column, it will be seen that all outstanding rates are to be at once paid by the burgeeaea indebted for the same, otherwise they will be recovered forthwith by process of law. This course has been made absolutely necessary by the financial position of the Council. It is well known that at every meeting new and increasing demands are boing made on the funds, but which the latter are unable to meet. If the burgosses would consider the fact that they have only to pay their rates once a year, also that they must pay them whether they like it or not, possibly the severity now proposed would not have to be exercised. Why the Couucil should continue to pay bank interest when that waste of good money could always be avoided by enforcing prompt payment of debts due and owing to the Borough funds, has always been a mystery. However, we congratulate the Councillors on their new departure, and hope it will have all the success it deserves.
