The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, SEPT. 29, 1891. Feilding Post Office

The work at the Feilding Post Office is becoming greater day by day with the progress of settlement iv this district. The stafi cousists of the Postmaster, one assistant, and one mes senger. To give some idea of what these officials have to do we have made some inquiries, and find that they have to receive and despatch all inward and outward correspondence for the following district offices, one of which is thirty six miles distant; viz. Apiti, Pemberton, Fowler's, Ktwitea, Cheltenham, Buuuythorpe, Waituna, Cunningham's, Maugaone, Taonui, Makino, and Awahuri. To each of these offices the postmaster has to make periodical visits of inspection. Besides matters connected with postal affairs, the postmaster also conducts the affairs of the Government Insurance Depaartment, and in addition to the splendid " life 1 business " has the superintendence of the local investment of large sums of money advanced on mortgage by the department, negociated through him. He is also Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages, for the whole district,, and last but not the least important, he has to collect Government taxes , and revenue of all kinds down to the issue of sporting licenses. We may estimate by the Government returns, that not less than £50,000 a year passes through his hands. To do all s this work to the satisfaction of their superiors, the postmaster and his assistants have to keep well into the I collar, and it is highly creditable to them that they do their duty so well, and without friction with the public. Thanks to Mr Macarthir, our membßr, considers le improvements in the postal and telegraphic arrangements in connection with this to .vn and district are likely to be effected soon, of which the following are the most important. Telephone communication will at once he tstablished with Bunny tborpe and Fowler's shortly after the con- , elusion of the Fiuancial year ; Buunythorpe being the first because the wires are' already placed. Anothei mail each day will probably be senl to Bunnythorpe within a very short time. It will not be necessary to open Money Order offices at many of 3 the small sub-post offices because it is the intention of the Department to I issue postal notes up to £5, which will obviate any necessity for the more - expensive plan.
