The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, SEPT. 22, 1891.

In a complimentary, but perfectly just, article on the settlement of the Manchester Block, our contemporary the Waipawa Mail says : — " The success of the Feilding settlement is owing chiefly to its central situation, facility of access, mild and humid climate, and fertile, alluvial soil. There were but few blocks of Crown Land which combined the same advantages. Just as we have seen that settled and improved estates, when subdivided, readily find purchasers, so we find that settlers were willing to pay apparently higher prices for sections in the Feilding settlement than they w.ould have had to give for sections of Crown Lands." We may add that opening up the sections with good roads before selling them, was a large factor in promoting settlement.

Some Ministers of religion have asked permission from the Masterton School Committee to give an extra half hours' instruction to the children attending the school. In connection with this the Wairarapa Daily says, truly enough ; there is a bad tone about the New Zealand school boy which ought to be tempered at any coot or any sacrifice, and we are glad to see that Ministers of religion recognise that th«re is a mission work to be done amongst the foul-tongued boys of our public schools.

To-day Mr S. J. Thompson publishes a letter on the subject of " late closing, " to which the earne&t attrmion of those interested, whether employers or employed, is directed. The idea of selecting nine instead of ten o'clock as the honr of closing on Saturday nights, is a good one, and should commend itself to those of the public who are in the habit of putting off their shopping until the last available minute in the week. Mr Thompson finds fault with the words used by " Vigilance " but we have no doubt that jorrespondent will reply tor himself.
