Fatal Accident
«. Yesterday afternoon Mrs Klink, who resides in Gladstone street, missed her child Edith, aged 18 months. She made enquiries from Mr Carthew, who could then give her no information, but afterwards, about a quarter of an hour, Mr Carthew heard Mrs Klink cry out : "My God, my child is in the well." Mr Carthew went to the well, and sent for Mr Andrew Laing. On the arrival of the latter they took a clothes prop, and Mr Carthew with this brought the body to the surface of the water, Mr Laing then jumped into the well and the child was handed up to Mr Carthew. Dr Johnston -was sent for and did all that was possible to restore respiration, but life must have been extinct before the body was taken from the water. An inquest was held this afternoon before Mr Snelson, Coroner, and a verdict of " Accidental drowning " was returned. The following were the jurymen: — Messrs Ridley, Lovejoy, Trimble, Bilderbeck, Beading, and T. W. K. Foster (foreman). The funeral will take place to-morrow, and Mr Alfred Eade, undertaker, invites the friends of the unfortunate parents to meet at Gladstone street at half past one in the afternoon. ____________
