Waituna West

[from our own correspondent. I I ( Lambing is pretty well over in the district, and from what I can learn, most, owners are expecting a pretty fair in- ;: crease ; but until docking is over, it islargely a matter of guesswork. The high, price sheep are fetching, makes the farmer look after them carefully. Cattle are now been eagerly sought after as the . new clearings require stocking, therefore they are also commanding a good price. Lately a contingent of the unemployed was sent for from the other Island, by a contractor in the West Waitapu. Ten arrived and commenced work, things did not go smoothly, so the contractor cleared out, and the men followed, leaving sundry little accounts unsettled. Recently one ot our settlers thought he could improve his position, by trying Sydney as a place of residence. He was back here again in less than two months, having seen quite enough to convince him that it was not a patch on New Zealand as a place for a working man. There are large numbers of men at work in the Waitapu, who keep Crabb and Northcott's packhorses constantly at work taking in provisions. The Waituna Aided School is well attended, there being 30 scholars on the roll. The contractor for the cutting on Williamson's road East is nearly finished, so people can now ride through with safety. Oue of Welford's bushfellers recently had his camp burnt, and lost about £15 worth of property. There is a good show of fruit buds on the trees, and the earliest sorts are just coming into blossom.
