Ttie usual monthly t meeting of^the teduncil was held on Wednesday last. There were present — Crs Ransom (chairman), iJeKenzie, Masters, Hammond, Mitchell, &axon, an Robinson. The minutes of the previous meeting Nvere read and confirmed. The following inward correspondence Vas read and dealt with : — Erom the Justice Department, forYarding copy of the verdict and rider recorded by the jury at the inquest held on the body of John Hobban killed at Awahurl on 15th August. The 'Chairman stated that, on seeing the verdict in the press, he examined the iroad where the accident had occurred, and found the road to be metalled sixteen feet wide at that point. He saw where* the wheel of the vehicle had struck the side cutting, which he considered had happened through the horse turning off the road to enter Mr P. Desmond's place, where it was* bred. The Oversee,r also stated that the road ' was of sufficient width and according to law at the point where the accident had occurred. V '?< *~ * "■•'. It was resolved on the motion of Cr Saxon,, seconded by Or McKenzie, " That the "horse /driven by' the late John ' Hooban, having been bred' on the property of Mr Desmond,' turned off the road, at Mr Desmond's gate, and the 'council does, not bold itself liable in any way for, the, accident." < * From'J.^G 1 . Wilson, ' M.H.R.. informing the* council that he would oppose the •' One man one vote " incorporated in the Counties Act, and nad incensed to do so before the wishes of t'le Council had been made known to him.' t •"*' From the Department of Lands and Survey, acknowledging the- notice made by the Council to , construct the bridge over the Oroua River, between the Manawatu County and the- Manawatu Road District, under the powers" of the Public Works Act, 1889. From the Manawatu Road Board acknowledging the receipt of plans and specifications <of the Longburn Campbelltown r bridge-, and stating that the Board declined to pay any portion of its cost, and also .that they ■> would oppose it by all legal means. It was resolved that after the 16th of the present month, this Council apply to the Governor fdV power to construct a bridge over- the Oroua River, at the site where the~~Longburn-Campbelltown and -Longbnrn-Aorangi roads strike the river, and; to recover the half cost of the same ifrom the Manawatu Road Board, in the •terms of the Public Works Act, Amendment Act 1889. From the Manchester Road Board, enclosing a copy of the pfaus and specifications for a bridge across the Oroua river • atAorangi, requiring the Council to pay onerfourth, (£750) of the estimated cost, .(£3000) of its construction. After some discussion, in which the Council considered the proposed bridge would be of little value to the ratepayers of the county. - It' was ' proposed by Cr Saxon, and seconded by Cr Robinson, " That the ' Manawatu County Council, having their share to pay towards keeping the Iwaiuri bridge in repair, think the claim sent in by. Manchester Road Boad unreasonable, and object to pay any share." It was proposed by Cr Saxon, " That Mr Prior; as "agent for the Bishop of Nelson, be informed ,that if the gorse complained of be not removed within one month from date, the same will be cleared by the Council, and the cost of the same will be 6ued for in the R.M. Court, in chain sections, as each 'section is completed." — Carried. On the nfotion of the Chairman, it was resolved,- " That the overseer be instructed to .place culverts and bridges on the 'drains, in Sansou's-line, so as to rmtke , it passable' for . traffic,' and' that Mr Cooper and Mr Sanson be given notice to xeinove their fences, which are obstructing traffic on the line." < ' _ Cr'x Saxon „ brought up_ the question of 4ne danger of the telegraph poles on t ie .Feilding-Awahuri Road, to tiaffic. ±le proposed, " That the Postmaster- General ...be written to and requested to have all - the telegraph poles removed on the road .known as the Feilding-Awahuri Road where likely to be m the way of traffic and dangerous jo L the public, and that a confim.ttee J>e appointed, con i .ting of the Chaiunan, Cr Hammond, and the mover, to decide which poles are put in dangeroils' positions."— Seconded by Cr Mcienzie and carried. Resolved, 1 ," That' the action of Cr Hammond' in calling tenders for the formation on the Taipo-Awahuri road be confirmed." ' Tlie following tenders were opened : — Maintenance of metalled roads — James Munro, £20 per mile tor one year, or £18 per mile for~ three years. Repairing Taipo-Awahuri road— Robert Gillie, £55 lls 9d, 3s 6d per chain. J. Thompson's tender was accepted. - Leii^e of Shannon Ferry for'^ne or two years — Hopkirk 8r05.,, one year, , £ll2 \ ,W. H- Howe, i-104; J; -Hillary, 1 one year, £105, or two years, £230 ; CM. Richards, one year, £91 ss;' J--T. Wells, 'one* year, £91 ; sec- - ond year, £100 ; T. Bow, one year, £76. The tender of J. Hillary was accepted. The tender for the maintenance of the main roads wa» considered by some to be "excessive. The~ Chat nan said that several tenders would nave been in for the work it the specifications had stated the quantity of metal to be laid on. Contractors had no basis to, calculate on. Cr' Saxon moved that the men employed by the Council on the roads be requesttdin future io state, when p .tring in their clainas for payment, what wo k they had been engaged on ; also that it be an instruction to the overseer to avoid placing big metal on the roads." The motion was seconded and carried. It was proposed by Cr McKenzie, seconded by Cr Hammond, " That the Chairman, Cr Robinson, ani the mover be a committee to examine the Sandon : Foxton road, with a" view of a3certai iing the best way of obtaining metal, and where the clay -and metal can be placed to the best advantage, the committee to report at the next meeting." — Carried. .
