MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY [from our own correspondent. I , A meeting was held iv the Town Hall, Birmingham, on Weduesday 9tb inst, to consider the ad visibility of establishing a* Mutual Improvement Society in Birmingham. The first item on the programme was the address by the chairman,. Mr T. A. Bryce. The subject of Mutual' Improvement was dwelt upon at somelength by Mr Bryce, whose remarks were* frequently applauded. Songs were then contributed by Miss" Lowes, Mr Munt, Mr H. Tolley, senr^. and an impromptu, speech <>n the subject of matrimony, by Mr H. Tolley,. juur., Mr t Tolley made a-capital-peech, and although the themewas cho&n for him by the audience, yetit was quite apparent that it was not the> first time he had thought about matn- - mony. The business of the meeting was at this stage proceeded with. Mr H. Tolley, junr., proposed, and Mr (1. Any on,, seconded. That a Mutual Improvement Society be formed in Birmingham. The» fiey Mr Birks> and the mover and seconder of the resolution, made capital! spe'-nhes in favor of sucn. a Socioty beingstarted, and the- spj. kers agreed that the society should have as wide a range as possible* The proposition on being: put to the meeting, was carried unanimously. Mr Anyon waa appointed secretary and treasurer pro tern. The nextitem was. the excellent refreshments pro- * vided by Mr G. Anyon. The Eey W. - Birks, MißsKili2:our;,andMr Tolley, junr., contributed songs in. the order named. Mr A. Fergusson in moying a vote of ' thanks to the chairman,, referred to thesociety just started, and he hoped that both old and jonpg would become members of the Association. Mr Fergusson's sound, sensible remarks were well received. The chairman returned thanks-, for the vote accorded him,, and with " Auld Lang Syne " the meeting broke up, eyeryone expressing satisfaction for haying; spent a very pleasurable evening. A meeting of members of the, Birmingham Mutual Improvement Society will take place in the Town Hall on Wednesday, the 16th instant, to- draw up rules,, appoint officers, order ,of business, general details* Intending members are requested to be- present.
