Ashurst Notes

fOUK OWN COKKeSPONDENT/} Tbere is to be a meeting of the settlers of the Pohanginar district on Saturday' next at 11 o'clock-, at Pohangina for the purpose of discussing the road question. It is expected to be a representative meeting of all that district between the Pohangina and Oroua rivers, and also of those settlers of Awahou, and the small runs on the east side of the river. I Mr Palmer, of the Pohangina store, on the Valley end road, has been* most energetic in the matter — in fact, he is the moving spirit, and has seen Mr Macarthur, and the Minister on the subject. The Star is read by many of the settlers at the upper and unopened end of the Harbor Board Block. I trust they!; may be all induced to attend, and strengthen the hands of "those who are to try and obtain that first necessity of settlement, It is not enough to wish well to 1 the cause and hope that those who take it in hand will prosper ; but personal acquaintance with the whole reading scheme is necessary, and that can only be obtained by rubbing shoulders with your neighbours and exchanging ideas. There will'be^people at the meeting very, well acquainted with much of the unopened country, grand country it is, they say. Come and hear. On dit that the " Colonial." is the bank that is to open a branch. at Ashurst. Mr D. D. Walker caught a rabbit today on the Bunnythorpe road, his dog chased it into a hollow stump ; he took it out alive. The school roll now stands at 213 — four more in August.. Advance Ashurst I What a grand idea for the landless and improvident is held out by a correspondent of yours " optimist, " '" The equalization of property. " No wonder there are so many unemployed about ; the wonder would be to find them doing nothing for themselves, when they see the time rapidly, approaching, that will give them a bit of some one else's land at present guarded by the Conservative bulldogs. The Liberal party whit h " optimist" Luds so much, is only truly liberal in his eyes when with other people's property. Well, it is a capital plan to return to retain, no doubt. And that is the only merit belonging to it. N.B. The " Liberal " party who would so " liberally " dispense other people's property, seem to Like care to get a good share of the people's money by way of honorarium. Conservatives notice these HtJe t icks of so called Liberals and augur from them the sort of " liberty and equality " the " optimist " persuasion, believe in.
