Borough Affairs

We are glad to learn that the Borough Council do not intend to let the subject of the improvement of Manchester Square drop, and have passed a very praiseworthy resolution for the furtherance of that very desirable object. The public works in other parts of the Borough which were at the same time considered, are also of considerable importance to the ratepayers, and we hope that they will all be undertaken, of course «vith a due regard to economy. One work which is of special importance, is that required by the residents in the upper part of Manchester street, and we hope that their wishes will receive all the consideration they deserve. Our best advice to them is to be persistent in pressing their claims on the Council, and they must succeed at last. The discussion which took place on the subject of agents' yqtes, appears to have waxed heated at times, because if the councillors had been cool they would never have passed a resolution; authorising the Town Clerk, as Returning Officer, to " get a legal opinion so near an election. Experience has taught all the English speaking? world that the opinion of one law} r er may be good, but a second lawyer will give an opinion diametrically opposed, while a judge and jury will decide that both are absolutely and unmisfcakeabiy wrong. When the election ta&es place next week any agent may demand a voting paper, and if the Returning Officer refuses to give one, or to accept it when marked by the elector, he will do so at his own risk. Nominally a majority of the Councillors have accepted that risk so far, but aotually if it "came to the pinch. " we doubt whether they would be willing to " cash up."
