Captain Sommeryille Tpill arrive in Wellington next week to -approve of the site chosen and to consult the Executive as to preliminaries. From its central situation this should prove the most convenient range in the colony for the purposes of the Association. A,t a' meeting of officers of the Wellington Garrison, held on Tuesday night, at ■which Major Newall presided, after a «bort discussion it was unanimously decided to form . an, institute to be named 1 "" The Naval and Military Jnstitute. It was decided to ask the Son. U. J. Seddon, Minister of Defence, to be patron. Lieutenant-Colonel Hume was elected president. Major Newall accepted the position of .vice-president, and Lieut. Campbell, of the Navals, was elected secretary and treasurer pro tern. The following were elected the committee :— Captains Collins,' Moorhouse and Hobday Xt .was decided that all officers on the active/ unattached, and honorary lists should be eligible, as members ; that officers of the New Zealand Militia, retired officers, whether military or naval, should be eligible as honorary members*. Before the meeting broke up Major Newall expressed his satisfaction at the step the •officers had taken in forming the Institute, ■and Loped it would be productive of good results.' He believed it would be the means of improving volunteers in all matters pertaining to military and naval matters. He also expressed the opinion that , the* Government would assist the Institute in every way within reason. A vote of thanks to the-Chairman terminated the .meeting. — NiZ. Times.
