The Feilding Star. TUESDAY, AUGUST 25, 1891. Peace and War

Although the disturbances in China may, oh the surface, appear to be of a purely local character, arising out of Tnisgovemment, or a novel desire for change which has come urlbn the most unchangeable people on the face of the earth, yet it is not impossible that serious European complications I may be the outcome thereof. Out- ; rages by -the Chinese on foreig- | ners, to obtain redress for which the fleets of the Great Powers are now assembling in the Yellow Sea, are no new thing, but this is the first time in history that such a powerful combination has been formed to avenge) them. Of course at this distance f irom the centre of operations, dependant entirely on the Press A&-~ sbciatio ; n for facts on which to form an opinion, it is difficult to draw any reliable conclusions on the subject, but from the general aspect of affairs ! we are Inclined tp the believe: that an Europeatn war is not far distant, and that such a calamity may-.'easily be precipitated by the most trivial accident in connection with the affairs in China. .Knowing how deeply interested Russia is in the question, and keeping ia view the vast preparations that nation has been making for war, we do not doubt but that a) pretext may be found in tbe strained relations which .have existed for so long between Russia and Chinai to make the cause of a quarrel, which must involve others of the Great Powers iv its vortex. While there is peace there is yet hope for peace, biyt there have been far too many profe ssions lately of national friendship for- us to place much faith in its long conti nuance.
