News from Zeehan.

The following letter, dated July 21st, from an old resident here to Mr Ben Poole, has beori handed to us for publication. " I write you a few lines, as I promised to let you know what sort of a place Zeehan (Tasmania) is. I cannot speak very well at present of things, for owing to the want of machinery they cannot sink, and it will be twelve months before the (railway) line is finished to get it up. The reefs they haye got are only • blows' of iron stone on the surface that goes about six ounces of silver to the ton. All the lodes seem to die out as they go down ; but, as it is an extensive field, where about two thousand different coin- . panics are at work, they may get something good yet. If twenty out of the lot get it they will do. It is no use for a man to come here to look for contract work as the jobs are taken yery cheap, and it is a poor spec, for a man to come to do navvy work. As it is a terrible place for rain, and tucker is yery dear, he could not make 15s a-week. Miners get 10s a shift, and must be a miner. This land you hear about is not worth five shillings a square mile. Land in the township has brought good prices, as much as j£Boo for a section in the main street, but outside of that it is not worth a rap. The only people who have done anything in speculation are the dealers in scrip, who have in many cases made good money." This is not a very cheerful picture.
