The Manchester Rifles paraded on Thursday night for inspection by Major Newall. Although the weather was bad and the roads worse, there * *ras a respectable muster of 43 of all ranks. ' After Major Newall had completed his inspection, Captain Pleasants, ,aud Lieuts. Kiiton and Bray exercised tha men. The noncommissioned' officers had then each a" share to do, and acquitted them- 1 selves tolerably well. It is evident Major Newall has made up his mind that everyone, from the highest to the lowest, shall -thoroughly, understand his work, and it" is safe to predict from the steady progress the men are now making, that the Manchester Hifles will be second' to none m the Wellington district, for smartness and discipline, in the course of the^next twelve months. After the parade had finished Corporal Milson and Vol. Belfit were- appointed orderlies for ' September. Vols. Bellve, Petherick, Dogherty, and Pleasants, were nominated for coiporals,- and they will be 'examined as to their efficiency in about six months. Several recruits offered, who will probably be accepted. The necessary, appliances for the, ■gymnasium have been sent for, and vill be ready for use in about a fortnight.
