Australia v. New Zealand
A correspondent of the Napier | ' sVlegi-H,ph. from Sydney •writes : — *' Business people here are complaining very much, about dull times, and leuts are .coming down very rapidly. Some of. -the best business sitescorner too— are vacant. The. floating population who have left " your- colony are becoming to realise the truth of the proverb, " out of the fryingpau ■ into the fir^e." Situations and -work of most kinds are as difficult to sret here as iv New Zealand. These colonies are now beginning to feel the ■pinch of the times, and the fear is it out: begipuiug. This colony dares | not 'stop its public works, and so loans j must be floated at any price t • keep ! the " big army*' employed, and so prevent disturbances. There is a general' feeling here that New Zealand will yet come to the front, and will be one of the most prosperous of the Australasian colonies before very long.- Many of the old New Zealanders wonld ' gladly Teturn to your shores. and 'many* others too, with considerable capital, were' it not for the unsettled state you appear to be in. It : see'ms" a great pity : you should be .going in.for what appears to be class legislation, as if the interests of capital < and labor were, distinct or inimical, and so scaring away investors. Let us "hope .the good sense of f your legislators will prevail,^and •do" nothing which will retard the general progress of "your fine colony."
