The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, AUGUST 13, 1891.
Tb:e Wanganui Herald, in dealing with the question of the Agent-Generalship and the report that the Premier would relieve Sir F. Dillon Bell, says : — No doubt the Opposition would like to know who is to succeed Sir F. Dillon Bell, as also would some expectant ones on the other side of the House, but they will have to exercise patience yet a little longer, as the Ministry have not yet decided the momentous question as to who is to be our next Agent-General. Our contemporary concludes by saying : We do not pretend to know what the intentions of the Government are in regard to filling the yacancy shortly to be caused by Sir Dillon Bell's retirement, but feel confident that the next occupant of the position will be a worthy successor to his predecessors — Dr Featherstone, Sir Julius Yogel, and Sir Dillon Bell, all of whom filled the appointment with credit to themselves and benefit to the Colony. We do not think that Mr Ballance would be justified in sacrificing his present position and prospects for that of a mere political appointment. As a confirmation of this opinion we may state that our contemporary, the N.Z. Times, on Tuesday last stated, on the highest authority, that there was no truth whatever in the rumour connecting the name of the Hon. Mr Ballance with the Agent-Generalship. We do not see why the Wanganui Herald could not have been as outspoken, because anyone might easily infer from the tone of the article now under notice, that it was not intended to deny the appointment of Mr Ballance was not impossible.
