The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, JULY 23, 1891. The Public Trust Office

The following is the report of the Pubhe Accounts Committee on the Publio Trust Commissions' report:— (l.) That it would be to the advantage of the Pub ho Service that the office of Public Trustee be filled by some other pert<oa than Mr Hamerton ; (2.) That failing; Mr Bam erton'e resignation the Government bo requested to take proceedings to remove him from his office under the Public Trust Act ; (3.) That the Committee recommend that a superannuation allowance be made to Mr Hammerton from the Ist of August, 1891, of the same amount as if he had retired from the Public Service in June 1880, upon certificate, under the Civil Service Superannuation Act, 1858, section 1. Speaking on this report seye raj members thought the House should be afforded an opportunity of discussing the Committee's report. The Premier said a Bill was in course of preparation by the Public Trustee embodying many of the recommendations made by the Public Trust Commissioners, and full opportunity would, therefore, be given for discussing the Committee's report on the second reading of that Bill. As to the portion of the Committee's report referring to Mr Hamerton, he (Mr Ballance) might say that Mr Hamerton was entitled to a pension before he became Pub lie Trustee, and the Committee therefore think that he should receive some pension up to June, 1880, at which time he ceased to be Commissioner of Stamps and be» came Public Trustee. The Wanganui Education Board have taken a decided step in the right direction and passed a resolution : " That in all cases where the Chairman of the Board knows that dances are to be held in any school-house in this district, he instruct the solicitors to take action to prevent the same." There can be no two opinions ou the prudence of this measure, although in some of the country districts, where the school-building is the only one suitable, or available, for dances, it will certainly be looked upon as a hardship by the young people.
