Mr Hayter has issued the population returns, which show that of victoria to be 1,144,405 ; New South Wales, 1,134, 207 ; Queenslaud, 393,938 ; South Aus tralia, 320,006; Western Australia. 49, 836 ; t0ta1— 3,038,391. The population of Tasmania is 146 667 ; New Zealand 6-6,830. A. considerable increase is ex* pected in the New South Wales figures when the final returns are made up, but *hey are not expected to be equal to those of Victoria. The flood waters have vanished, revealing desolation and wreck. ! here is much sickness on account of exposure dunne; the floods at Melbourne. Sydney, July 17. The debate in the House indicates that the Labour vote will go with the Government H.M.S. Bapid has arrived, bringing Bishop Selwyn, who, though improved in health, is siill unable to walk. He leaves for England shortly. The result of the recent trial of brakes is that the Commissioners have decided to fit goods trains with the Westinghouse brake, at a cost of £100.000. Passenger trams are already supplied.
