♦ " Old English Tea " in the Assembly Rooms this evening. We have to acknowledge receipt of a batch of Parliamentary papers. A Masonic Lodge will be opened at Ashurst in a few weeks. The Kiwitea Road Board will meet on Saturday next. Mass will be held at St. Bridget's next Sunday at 8 o'clock. The Maori prophet, the great Te Whiti, has been declared a bankrupt. The potato is cooked. How art thou fallen, 0 Lucifer, son of the morning ! Rev. T. DeWitt Tal mage's new Tabernacle at Brooklyn, was opened on a late Sunday for the first time. The collection for the day amounted to £10,000. A pleasant entertainment was given at at Palmerston, on Monday evening last, by the children attending St. Patrick's school. During the evening presents were given to the Rev. Father Patterson. A man of much observation remarked the other day " How calmly placid is the expr--«sion on the face of even the most sViftish hm-so, whon ifHs hitched up outaide of a public iiuuee."

We hive to acknowledge receipt ot a press ticket for the "Old English Tea " to-night. The direct English mail arrived by the mid -day train to-day, and was promptly sorted and delivered. The boys in the tipper standards of the Boys' School in Wanganui, have given formal notice that if their wrongs are not righted they intend to strike. The Chronicle advises, as a remedy, that the teachers also strike. The growth of fruit trees here since last season is surprising. At a meeting of the Hunt Club Steeplechase Committee held on Tuesday afternoon, it was decided that nominations would be receiyed on Aug. 22nd, weights declared September 3rd, and acceptances September 7th. To-day we publish a preliminary notice that on Wednesday next Mr and Mrs J. W. Foley will commence a series of their grand drawing-room entertainment in the Feilding Assembly Rooms. Further particulars will be published in our next issue. The only way to check the wind bags who waste so much time in the House, is to bring in a Bill to authorise the deduction from the "salaries" of the cost of compiling and printing Hansard. Even the threat to do this thing would have a beneficially deterrent effect. A shipment of 91 stoats and 258 weasels, to the order of the Wairarapa Rabbit Board, is to arrive by the Aorangi in a few days. This will be the last ship« ment of what the Daily calls "the natural enemy," by the Board under the existing arrangement. The Sports Committee of the Fire Brigade had a good time yesterday. They canvassed a large part of the town" ship, and every person responded by giving a contribution, either in the shape of money or goods. The total already realised so far is estimated at about £24. As Mr Daw will give up possession of the stables he has occupied so long to the new lessees, at the end of this month, he desires that his many patrons and friends should know that he has leased the section near Mr Parr's farriery, where he will have erected suitable stables to meet all the requirements of bis extensive connection. The N.Z. Times Hayelock correspondent says : — I have reliable authority for stating that the Gorge claim, at Deep Creek, has at last struck it rich. It is understood that the corps will be asked to appoint a committee to consider ways and means for the erection of a drill shed, gymnasium, etc. At a meeting hold last evening of the Feilding Court of Foresters, Dr Sorley was appointed Surgeon. The election of officers took place at the same meeting as follows :— Bro. J. Fraser, 0. R ; Bro. R. Bowler, S. C. R. ; Bro. F. Petherick, S. W. ; Bro. J. McAhster, J. W. ; Bro. W. Pearson, S. B. ; P. C. R. Bro. P. Thomson, J. B. The 0. R. was installed by the retiring C. R., P. C. R. Bro, P. Thomson, the C. R. elect installing the other officers. At the Red House, Mr S. J. Thompson hae now in stock some of the most beautiful silver-plated and glass ware goods ever imported into Feilding. The pendant jardinier globes are quite novelties, tasteful in design, made of elegantly coloured glass, with suspending brackets mounted in. colored plush. If only to see to what perfection the manufacture of this class of goods has been brought, every person of taste should pay a visit of inspection to the show case at the Red House.
