LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
Tuesday, July 14. The Hon. Mr Walker moved the second reading of the Stock Driving Bill. He pointed out the amount of sheepstealing that went on in all parts of the Colony, and that legislation was necessary to protect the farmers. A similar Bill had been formerly passed by the Council, but - it had been thrown out in the other House; In his part of the' country an association of farmers had been formed for the purpose of protecting themselves against the systematic' thieving, and he hoped his Bill would be allowed to pass. If the second reading was agreed to he would be glad to send it to the Stock 1 Committee. If this was done lie felt-sure a very great improvement in the law would be effected. The Bill was read a second tone and' referred to the Stock Committee.' In reply to some remarks by the' Hon- . D. Stewart, the Hon. Mr Buckley, stated that the Marriage Act Bill had no special reference to the Salvation -Army or any other body. The Bill had been introduced for the purpose of giving certain religious bodies power to solemnise marriages without having to go'through a ceremony to which they had scruples.
