This affects the * question whether jute bags were not a "y&ty dangerous cargo to carry, and liaWe io spontaneous combustion* — Two years ago a, vessel left Calgstfo bound for the same destinatiop^yith a jsimillar cargo, and has nevefoeen heard of since. The j CoutJ^eS«ied ihat the wreck was primarby the discovery of fire having •compelled the captain to alter his course *nd make for a New Zealand port ; that s gale from the north-west drove the vessel on th* Auckland Islands, and that the small amouni; of canvas she could carry, and the quantity of water in the hold making it impossible to keep her off the ' shore or clear of the island, the vessel was leached to saye life. Captain Jones and his officers were found blameless in the matter, the court expressing the opinion that they had done all that was possible to save the yessel.
