By Vigilance. Feilding going ahead, magnificent brick store being erected in Manchester Square. This is the third brick building' as well as one of concrete. The progress of this district is steady and substantial, and cannot fail to draw the attention of the outside public. There is no booming, and very, liftle music in the shape of loan rates to face. The comparison between Palmerston and Feilding, is that the former is the stuffing without the goose, while the latter is the. goose without the stuffing. ' Bye- the- bye, what has. become of the Fire Brigade ? Have the' members of the Brigade reached such a state of perfection in the working of the engine, &c, that they require no practice ? They are surely in the same boat as the local footballers, no universal enthusiasm, all the interest snd work bem.^ left to one or two, whioh is. unjust to the Brigade as" a whole, as well as to those who do try to keep it up, inasmuch as, when men are over-worked it is impossible for them to do anything correctly. Volunteer movement looking up, shows there are some energetic men in Feilding. When the " swearing"-in takes place I would suggest that no" French " be .used. A funny world we live in. People can do as they like as long as their Crimea are - not made public. It seems strange that such a fuss should be made over a game or two of baccarat when gambling is so common. I wonder if the editors of the moralising press are so pure as not to have played a game of chance for a stake — but then the disgrace is not for- the wagering, it is the publicity which shocks their sham modesty. What is the world — or rather New Zealand — coming to ? A team of " lady " footballers, is being organised in Auckland to "do the colony," No wonder our reps are losing heart, and considering the advisability of retiring on their past victories. Perhaps this was the reason why a correspondent in the Stab, 'recently, objected to the electoral -franchise being extended' to women, as it may well be calculated to shake the neryes of the. strongest. Why don't the Feilding people agitate and get a telephone exohange ? It would
